Philip O Smith 1973 In Memoriam Reed Magazine
He paid for his equipment and fees with his hard-earned money including paper routes, yard work, painting neighbors’ houses, working at Rathgebs on the Avenue and the Shell Station at the corner of Harding and Pacific Avenue. He started all this at an early age and continued to juggle these monetary activities while being a good student and thru faithful practicing his sports skills lettering in baseball, basketball, football and tennis in high school and Junior College. After marrying Julie Wager in 1958 they both agreed he should continue his education. So, after meeting the requirements to transfer to Sacramento State College he earned his way by working at the Shell Station and then worked as a janitor at a grammar school in Sacramento while he earned his degree in Business Administration.
He then spent a year in Ireland lodging with a travelling family who took pity on him while he was hitchhiking in Athlone, County Westmeath. He told them he was an English gypsy visiting Ireland, and they allowed him to live rent-free in a spare caravan, while he contributed a portion of his unemployment benefit towards food. This family asked Smith to leave when they became uncomfortable about sexual remarks he had made to young female members of the family. He became well known locally Phillip John Smith and was a regular patron of the Shamrock Cafe on Stratford Road and of the Rainbow pub in Digbeth, where he was employed on a casual basis as an odd-jobber and served as an unofficial taxi driver for drinkers. As a result of their inquiries into Smith's background, police launched an investigation into the death of a fourth woman who was discovered to have had links to him. Patricia Lynott, a 47-year-old divorced mother of two, had moved to Birmingham from Athlone during the mid-1990s.
Watson said the purpose of the prison system was to improve public safety and one of the ways Corrections did that was by making sure prisoners were handled safely. Smith regularly takes legal action against Corrections for what he believes to be violations of his rights in prison. Convicted murderer and child molester Phillip John Smith has been deported from Brazil and will land in Auckland early tomorrow morning. In an exclusive statement to Radio New Zealand News, convicted murderer and sex offender Phillip Smith said he decided to flee overseas after the result of his latest parole hearing and no-one helped him escape. “Each month I’ll take you inside some of our most infamous incidents, notorious offenders and behind the scenes of high-profile trials and events to show you what’s really happening in your backyard,” she said.
The leave was part of a plan to reintegrate the convicted killer and sex offender back into the community. He is predeceased by his father Lawrence Ashley Smith, his mother Georgia Witter Smith, his sister Melba Smith Dubois and his grandson Clinton Stanley Roberts. Phillip John Smith a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend passed away suddenly on September 24, 2018. If you knew Phillip, you know that he was a man of God, and he loved the Lord with all his heart. If you're in danger now - phone the police on 111 or ask neighbours of friends to ring for you. Today A Moment In Crime is about the tragic deaths of the young sisters and the impact on their family, particularly their older sister Alicia.
Phil loved his job and worked long hours during the week, but the weekends were always for family and church. He coached Little League, attended swim and diving meets, drove teams to out of town competition, bid on 4-H animals at fairs, spent holidays at 3-Day horse events and used his beloved Kabota tractor to haul hay, make riding arenas, etc. We welcomed an inner-city boy into our family after the Watts Riots, hosted 2 exchange students – Gabi Rundshagen from Germany and Martti Niemi from Finland and sponsored numerous foreign children. Smith was apprehended after he contacted West Midlands Police saying that he wished to make a statement about Corcoran's disappearance. At the time, however, her body had not been positively identified, and inquiries quickly established that some aspects of his account were false.
The murder inquiry, named Operation Green, uncovered a large quantity of strong evidence incriminating Smith, but at first he denied responsibility. He maintained his innocence as his trial began in July 2001, but later in the proceedings changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment. The motive for his crimes was unclear, but police who arrested him believed that a "lack of permanent sexual relations" was a contributing factor. John Phillip Smith, 47, known to his friends as JP, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 22, 2013, while traveling in the state of Virginia.
